What Are The Social Ramifications of Prop 8?

If Proposition 8 passes, there will be NO significant social effect. This law is intended to prevent any significant social impact that might be brought about by pro-gay marriage laws.

But, what if it does NOT pass?

A LOSS OF MEANING

Many experts "from across the academic disciplines -- history, ethics, economics, law and public policy, philosophy, sociology, psychiatry, political science -- " believe that one of the resulting social ramifications, if Proposition 8 were to fail, is that marriage would lose all meaning. The experts have expressed many different reasons for this, but each one is highly probable. Read the articles below to get an idea of what they predict will happen if marriage is changed, and/or why marriage is important to society just as it is.

A SLIPPERY SLOPE

One of the ways marriage would lose its meaning is that other groups of sexual minorities, such as polygamists, and polyamorists (multiple men and/or women in a mutual relationship), are already planning their own day in court, with arguments based primarily on those raised in the defense of gay marriage. The successes of these groups rests largely, if not entirely, on the legalization of gay marriage.

When Proposition 22 was first proposed publicly, Conservatives were quick to point out that legalizing gay marriages would open the doors to legalizing many other types of behavior, particularly other non-traditional forms of marriage. Gay marriage advocates spurned these arguments as ridiculous, and labeled it the "slippery slope" theory.

Is there any evidence that gay marriage would really send us down a "slippery slope?"

Another way that Proposition 8's failure would affect society is that it would assist in the direct assault of homosexual activists on religious freedom in our country.

It has also been shown that if Proposition 8 fails to pass, and gay marriage is legalized, the State of California will have a statutory responsibility to present homosexual relationships, in school classrooms, to children as young as kindergarten.

GIVING HOMOSEXUALITY LEGAL PREEMINENCE

Another way that Proposition 8's failure would affect society is that it will continue the legal tyranny that is currently giving legal preference to gay rights with complete disregard to any effect such decisions will have on the rest of society.
